Journey:
A Second-Generation
Family-Service Professional
Who is Not a
Natural-Born Marketing Expert
Hi, I'm Jody Johnston Pawel, a
Licensed Social Worker, Certified Family Life Educator, and second-generation
parent educator with more than 25 years experience starting, facilitating,
administrating and marketing family-service programs in non-profit settings and
as a private practitioner, including:
-
Founding The Family Network (TFN), a
member-led,
parent-to-parent support organization for which I served as Executive
Director for the first six years and which will celebrate its 20th
Anniversary in 2007. Our only publicity was a brochure, but when the media
learned about us we were featured in
two
full-page newspaper feature articles
and a
TV news
feature
story
by the
local
CBS affiliate. During this time, the ABC local affiliate hired me as the
Writer,
Assistant Producer, and on-air "Child Care Expert" for
the
"Ident-a-Kid"
Television Series, a
weekly news
spot featuring child safety tips. For almost two years, I worked with the
news anchorwoman, who taught me all the ins and outs of creating interesting
news stories and giving great interviews.
-
Coordinating, for 10 years, a local non-profit parent education program
for
Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley. It was because of this
part-time job and their lack of funding for materials that I wrote, on my
own time, the materials that eventually became the
award-winning Parents Toolshop book and parent education
curriculum. The only marketing I did initially was sending flyers to referral sources,
but word-of-mouth spread, making my parenting classes the most popular local parenting program.
The program's
outcomes were
statistically impressive, too, so soon other parent educators,
nationwide, were asking to teach my curriculum. Parents
wanted the binder of materials they received in class to be in book form, in bookstores,
so their non-local friends and family could get the information.
-
Creating Parent’s Toolshop® Consulting in 1992 to develop and oversee a
worldwide team of parent educators who teach Parents Toolshop®
classes. One part of the
comprehensive instructor certification training program I developed
in 1996 is on marketing. Since our instructors can be either
private consultants or non-profit staff members, I’ve had almost ten
years experience training and guiding parent educators as they start and
grow programs in their local communities.
-
Starting Ambris Publishing in 1996, as a result of parents, nationwide,
asking me for a book and other resources. When
The Parents Toolshop
went national in 2000, I hired an outstanding professional PR firm (www.MarketAbility.com) and took over seven
years of training from the top marketing experts in the world. Nevertheless,
I never quite felt knowledgeable or capable of applying the tools to
family-service programs and resources...until I happened to discover
three programs that transformed my life and career, from the
inside-out...
-
Serving as a Team
Leader for Three International Marketing Training programs:
the
90-Day Product Factory,
Web Traffic School,
and Book Yourself Solid.
This gave me inside access and personalized coaching from
Michael Port and
Mitch Meyerson,
the programs' authors. It also provided an already-developed marketing
training program for client-based service professionals, which I received
permission to develop into the Integrity Marketing training program for
family-service professionals.
Over the
years, I have also written and produced over 100
parenting resources, developed dozens of
programs for parents and family-service professionals,
presented hundreds of
workshops,
trained almost 100 parent educators, given almost 500
media interviews...and now teach others how to do the
same.
Together,
these experiences have transformed me from a shy, poverty-minded, non-profit
social worker…to a successful one-woman private practitioner who lives with more
passion, integrity and authenticity than ever before...and now advises and
trains other family-service professionals to get more clients, help them more
deeply,
build visibility for their services, and still prosper abundantly.
The story of my
transformational journey is inspiring (and only a few pages long). I'd like to
share it with you, so
read on...
